Working and Social Security Disability

Social Security’s Trial Work Period.

We often field calls from individuals wondering whether they can perform any work activity while receiving disability benefits. It is not always an easy answer because on one hand in order to qualify for disability, one must have a disability that prevents him or her from working. On the other hand, many people want to find out whether they can get back to work and sustain employment.

Social Security’s response to this, in part, is the trial work period. The program will allow a claimant to earn over $720 per month for up to eight months during a five year period to determine whether he or she can continue working full time. If the claimant can continue working, disability benefits would terminate.
